The Gallup Engagement survey asks employees twelve simple questions to check how emotionally committed people are to their job. Nine of these questions are directly related to feedback, covering topics like recognition, regular progress updates, sharing and evaluating opinions, and trusting relationships.
Teams with low engagement—and therefore little to no effective feedback—also scored low on the following business metrics:
The shocking fact is that only 13 % of employees worldwide are engaged in their jobs, according to the Gallup Report on the State of the Global Workplace. Gallup calculates that the ‘disengagement cost’ to the US alone amounts to between $450 billion to $550 billion per year. Millennials are the least engaged generation and only 19% say they receive feedback on a regular basis.
Unsurprisingly, years of research across the globe clearly shows that innovation and learning in organisations depend on the ability to give AND receive quality feedback. Despite the mounting evidence that skilled feedback produces high performance—and silence results in underperforming workplaces with unhappy customers—few organisations target feedback as a development area.
